HOW WE CAN HELP

 

Counselling is a safe and confidential environment which gives you the space and freedom to explore your own thoughts. It helps you to understand yourself better and the way you think which will ultimately  help you develop a clearer understanding of your problems. The more armed with information you are and the more tools you have, the easier it becomes to work through the difficulties you are facing so that you can come out of the other side feeling more positive. Counselling can also help you to understand other people's point of view, and the way you react to them.

 

Counselling is a journey that is a gradual process that may take time and consistency to work effectively.

 

Types of therapy

There are a range of different therapies that can be used. These will depend on the the counsellor's preferences, the difficulties you have and your personality. We appreciate that everyone has individual, specific needs. We chose from different psychological approaches to therapy to find what suits you best. We work to create an open and respectful relationship through which the work can take place.

Here are some examples:

 

Cognitive Behavioral therapy (C.B.T)

Research has shown that C.B.T can be more effective than medication in treating some mental health problems and it can be completed over a relatively short period of time.  C.B.T believes that our behaviors are learnt and so therefore can be unlearnt. The way we think results in the way we feel and behave. Finding out the unhelpful thoughts and changing them to a more positive and helpful way of thinking.

 

Humanistic therapy

Humanistic therapy is holistic and encourages self-exploration. Person centered and Gestalt also come under this umbrella. 

 

Psychoanalysis

Founded by Freud which perceives our thoughts to be out of our conscious control. Any psychological issues stem from childhood and need to be addressed in order to be resolved.

 

Attachment-based therapy

Attachment therapy focuses on how our early relationships with our attachment figures, shape the way we learn to interact with people in our adult years and what to expect from our relationships, when these are healthy experiences we have the same positive expectations from relationships later on but if there were difficulties in our early key relationships we often find ourselves in a hopeless cycle of repetition of those same difficult patterns.

Depression, anxiety and substance misuse are some of the various presentations that may reflect an "Insecure attachment style". Therapy can help you relearn ways to relate and to live rather than cope.

 

Play and sand tray therapy

Play has been proven neurologically to promote a child's social, emotional, cognitive and language development. When play is combined with professional and emotional support it enables a child to safely explore and learn more about their thoughts and feelings and educate and encourage positive coping strategies. 

 

The effects of trauma are most pronounced on the emotional part of the brain. The thinking and speech part of the brain is often deactivated for trauma survivors. When people recall their trauma there is a decreased ability to process and talk about the event and there are increased levels of emotion. Expecting clients to talk at this point may be difficult, if not impossible and may in fact be re-traumatizing.

It is recognized that trauma is sensory based and any traumatic memories are encoded not only in the brain, but within the body as well, so it makes sense that the treatment for traumatized children, adolescents and adults should also be sensory based. "Talking" therapy does not work in this area, sand tray and play therapy does. It gives great potential to override resistance and provoke the unconscious to become available to assist in reversing the impact of trauma.

Play therapy can include: drawing, dolls house, and Russian dolls.
