Self-Harm Support
Finding healthier ways to cope with overwhelming emotions
Self-harm can often be a way of coping with intense emotions, distress or feelings that seem impossible to manage alone. Whether youโre experiencing sadness, anger, numbness or emotional pain, therapy provides a safe and confidential space to talk about whatโs happening and begin exploring new ways to cope.
When youโre hurting deeply, self-harm can sometimes feel like the only way to find relief โ a way to express pain that feels impossible to put into words or to quiet emotions that feel overwhelming. For many people, it isnโt about wanting to end their life, but about wanting the emotional pain theyโre carrying to stop.
Moving Towards Healing
Finding new ways to manage difficult emotions
Self-harm is not a reflection of who you are, and it does not define you. It is often a coping strategy developed during times of intense distress โ a signal that you are struggling and deserve support, understanding and compassion. Therapy can help you explore what sits beneath these urges, build healthier coping strategies and find ways to feel more in control of your emotions.
Common experiences
Understanding Whatโs Happening
Self-harm can take many forms โ cutting, burning, hitting, or other behaviours intended to cause physical pain or injury. Behind these actions often lies emotional overwhelm, self- criticism, trauma, or a feeling of being disconnected or numb.
You may notice:
Intense feelings of shame, guilt or self-disgust
A sense of emotional numbness or emptiness
Sudden urges to harm as a way to release pressure
Hiding marks or feeling afraid of being โfound outโ
Difficulty expressing needs or emotions in words
Recognising these patterns is a powerful first step. It means you are beginning to see that there may be another way โ one that supports rather than punishes you.

Working Together to Heal
Therapy offers a safe non-judgemental space to talk about self-harm openly โ perhaps for the first time. Together, we work gently to understand what lies beneath the urge to harm and build new, compassionate ways of coping with the pain.
We focus on:
- Understanding triggers and emotional patterns
- Developing safer coping strategies and grounding techniques
- Building self-compassion and resilience
- Strengthening your support system and sense of safety
Healing from self-harm isnโt about shame or punishment; itโs about learning to respond to your pain with care and kindness. Over time, you can begin to find relief that doesnโt involve hurting yourself โ ways to express emotion, soothe distress, and rebuild trust in your body and mind.
